Pearl wasn't born yet when Sultan Sasabal and his wife Nanasha perished in what was eventually chalked up to be an unfortunate accident, but she remembers the impact their deaths had on her mother. Sasaro ul Saro was close to her older brother and was deeply fond of her sister-in-law, and the grief from losing them both persisted even a decade after they were buried. Little Sasara grew up on her mother's lap listening to nostalgic tales of the Ul siblings' childhood and all the mischief they got up to, and the little sultana would sit in too, eyes distant but smile fond.
Illness ended those early days of the cousins' quiet bonding and Sasaro's wondrous tales─the family relocated to the seaside, where Sasaro clung to life with trembling fingers and a wracking cough away from the deception and poisons of Ul'dah's courts. Upon her passing her husband took their daughter back to the city of gold at the start of A Realm Reborn, where Sasara reunited with her cousin for the first time in seven years. Nanamo welcomed her uncle and cousin back to the court with open arms and no outward sign of the struggles on her shoulders, and this is where father and daughter's paths diverged. Rurunzo's plunge back into the life of Ul'dahn nobility turned him for the worst and he grew obsessed with the idea of having more power. His daughter, second in line for the throne, was the perfect pawn.
But Sasara wasn't easily swayed. Rather, her mother's stories tethered her faith in Nanamo and in the Sultanate and in Ul'dah itself, and when her father's schemes grew clear to her she joined up with the Sultansworn as a page to forfeit her claim to the dynasty and to protect her cousin.
In post-Heavensward, after her 18th nameday, Sasara was placed as one of Nanamo's personal bodyguards.

Pearl's real name, Sasara, is taken by two princesses of the Final Fantasy series—Sarah of the original Final Fantasy and Sara of Final Fantasy III. It shares a link to other members of the Ul family having the "sa" phenome in their names (such as Sasabal or Sasagan).
